Chapter Fifteen

Lucy 15:1

After I awoke the next day, I pulled book after book from the shelves by my bed. There was no way I would be able to read them all in one day, but I needed to start somewhere. Cain wasn’t anywhere to be found and my breakfast had been brought by a little woman with three eyes. When I say little, I mean she looked completely normal except for the fact that she appeared to have been shot with a shrink ray gun and was half the size of my lower leg. Well, besides her height, maybe not entirely normal. She had webbing between her bare fingers and feet that gave off an aquatic vibe. I couldn’t imagine shoes were very comfortable, so I didn’t blame her one bit.

She walked in and set my food down quietly.

“Is there a notebook, pen, or highlighter somewhere? Or any of the above?” I asked when she was finished arranging everything on one of the many tables in my suite. She nodded and hurried away.

A few minutes passed, and a new equally interesting looking character knocked on my open door with a basket of office supplies. Where the first person had three eyes, this guy only had one and towered over me. He was completely opposite in stature, his lanky body folding over to hand me my goodies. I promptly took the basket and thanked him with a polite smile. He returned my grin with one of his own, showing off his massive set of razor-sharp teeth then backed out into the hallway closing the door behind himself.

Sifting through it all, I saw that there was more than what I’d asked for which was great since I hadn’t thought to ask for half the things they had included. Sticky notes. Sweet.

Grabbing my breakfast, I headed back to my pile of books and proceeded to chew and read. The first volume I picked up was titled, ‘The Care and Feeding of Lesser Demons.’ It looked old, worn, and smelled like an ancient library; someone must have put its contents to good use more than once. I sat it down and moved to the next one in the stack called, ‘Demon and Human Interrelationships: a guide to sensitive topics and how to handle them.’ I chuckled and moved on to the next book.

“Hell, Common Laws and Etiquette – Second Edition,” I read aloud before shoving the last piece of bacon into my mouth while grabbing my highlighter and pen. This was definitely the book I needed to start with. No wonder everything was outdated, Hell had been around forever, and the damn thing had been revised once. Geesh.

As I savored the last bit of crispy heaven, I flipped through the pages until I made it through the introduction section and landed on the table of contents. Seeing a chapter titled ‘Punishments,’ I skipped ahead. Maybe it would shed light on the whole finger thing.

My eyes skimmed over the page for useful keywords while my lips pursed in concentration.
